Get your intern off to a great start! Here are some things to think through ahead of time, and be ready to process with them on their first day.

LOGISTICS

  • Have a desk/workspace ready from them to use.
  • Give them a tour of your church building, if they are new to your congregation.
  • Show them where supplies are located in the office.
  • Will they need a key to the building?

POLICY

  • Are there any procedures or policies they need to follow as a staff member?
  • Will they need a Vulnerable Sector Check in order to work with children or other vulnerable persons? (If so, make sure they complete this process before their first day.)

CLEARLY DEFINED EXPECTATIONS

  • Are there set office hours?
  • Is there a dress code?
  • Are there any specific church events they are expected to attend?
  • Set up a regular time for a weekly check-in meeting.

JOB OVERVIEW

  • Explain the types of jobs and projects that the intern will be working on throughout the summer.
  • Discuss any personal goals they have for their internship experience.
  • Get them started on their first task or project.
